Company History
The beginning...
Numatic, founded in 1969, produced its first commercial vacuum cleaner design for cleaning boilers. With a small team and basic equipment, they used oil drums and everyday components to create a simple and reliable workhorse for commercial and industrial use.
Growing demand
By 1971, Numatic had outgrown its small Crewkerne facility and relocated to a watermill in Yeovil. Despite regular flooding, production continued and this is where they developed the NV-2 and NV-250, both durable all-steel vacuum cleaners. Numatic takes pride in being able to supply replacement parts for all their vacuum cleaners, including the original NV-2 and even the earliest model, No.1.
First Floor Machine
By 1973 we had started to break-into the professional cleaning industry and produced our first floor machine, plus wet and dry vacuums. Once again based on components that could be purchased from existing suppliers.
A new home
But by 1974, we had now outgrown the mill and we moved to our first real factory, in Beaminster, Dorset, where we gradually expanded over the next 20 years.
The birth of a legend
Beaminster was to be the home of 'Henry', the product for which Numatic is famous throughout the world; with sales increasing year by year from it inception in 1981.
Expansion continues
In 1990, we began manufacturing our products with subcontracted metal and plastic components. To stay competitive, we acquired the Chard location and expanded our production facilities.
Numatic SA opens its doors
We opened our doors in January 1995, providing full support to the South African market. Today, our products are used in various industries, including hotels, hospitals, kitchens and public transport, offering effective cleaning solutions.
Developed export markets in Africa
In 1996, we initiated a strategic effort to expand our export market in Africa. This decision was motivated by our company's vision to broaden our reach and establish a strong presence in the African continent.
Developed our Distributor strategy
Realizing the significance of a robust distributor network, we diligently devised a comprehensive strategy to identify and collaborate with dependable and knowledgeable distributors across the country.
Our first cordless Henry
In a groundbreaking leap forward for the cleaning industry, the first-ever cordless Henry has emerged, revolutionizing the way we approach household chores. With its signature red smile and unwavering commitment to performance, Henry has now cut the cord, providing users with unparalleled cleaning freedom.
We made Henry available online
In 2017, we proudly opened our local online shop, making Henry available to the public here in South Africa. It was an exciting year for us as we also reached the milestone of 10 million units made of our iconic product, Henry.
